What is an automatic stay?

NJ Bankruptcy Law FAQ

Q) What is an automatic stay?

A) Once a bankruptcy petition is filed, the court then issues a Notice of Automatic Stay which in essence stops all of your creditors listed in your bankruptcy petition from contacting you or seeking any type of payment from you. This prohibition stays in place until such time as the Bankruptcy Court removes the stay.
